Jesus Brings Liberty from the Law

The children of Israel in the Old Testament were required under the Mosaic Law given by God through his servant Moses to keep 613 commandments. Can you imagine having to keep 613 commandments and if you should break any one of them you would be guilty of breaking all of them (James 2:10)? Not to mention that breaking the law brought with it curses and punishment to the point of death e.g. Deuteronomy 27, 28; Leviticus 17:9;18 amongst others (the books of Exodus, Leviticus and Deuteronomy gives you all the laws the Israelites had to keep in order to find favor with God and what will happen if they don’t). All these laws however were to bring mankind to Christ when the fullness of time comes.

The death of Christ brought liberty from the law

The Word of God let us know that because the law could not save us (Hebrews 7: 18-19), but was only our school master leading us to Christ, when the fullness of time came God sent his Son Christ Jesus into the world to redeem us from under the bondage of the law (Galatians 3:19-25; 4:4-5).

The death of Christ has brought his people liberty, freedom from under the bondage of the law with all its sacrifices. Imagine how much bondage the people were under to keep the law (the law was given because of sin, not because God wanted to or it brought him pleasure- Mt 9:13; Gal 3:19). We no longer have to entangle ourselves under the bondage of the law to gain God’s favor, in fact if we continue to keep the law we have lost God’s divine favor:

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage…Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace”-Galatians 5:1, 4

Through the death of Christ and the freedom He brought, we are no longer saved by the works of the law (keeping the law) but by faith expressing it’s self through love-Galatians 5:6. Before faith came we were bond by the law until the Christ came on the scene-Galatians 4:23, 5:3-5.

This freedom given to us through the cross, however, does not permit us to live a sinful live. Not because God will not kill us immediately when we sin gives us permission to sin or an occasion to sin for the judgment of God is sure, though it delayed, as the forbearance of God leaded man to repentance-Romans 2:2-4. This freedom given to us is freedom to worship God and serve our brothers- Galatians 5:13.

God has given us freedom; we can accept this freedom by giving our life totally to him through baptism, infilling of the Holy Ghost and live a life according to the Word of God.
